Whenthe german submarine U-534 pulled out of the Kiel harbor on May 3,1945, it carried a record 17 tons of provisions about 5 tons more thannormal. British intelligence had reports that 20 U-boats were fleeingthe crumbling Third Reich with top-ranking Nazis, loot stolen fromoccupied countries and secret documents. Two days later, Alliedaircraft bombed the sub and sent it to a watery grave in the KattegatSea off Denmark.

What secrets did the U-534 takewith it to the deep? That question has nagged Danish diver Aage Jensenfor years. After he located the submarine in 1986, only 25km northeastof Anholt, Denmark, Jensen began trying to find money to raise theship. Last week a crew from the Dutch marine-salvage company Smit Takfinally brought U-534 to the surface. The operation was financed byDanish millionarie Karsten Ree, who plans to build a museum based onthe findings.

It will take months to sortthrough the U-boat`s contents. An initial search uncovered itemsremarkably intact, though not of great value. Among the things found:bottles of wine and condoms (standard military issue to a U-boat crew).Research had already dismissed the possibility that top Nazis had beenonboard, and crew members who survived the sinking said there wasnothing unusual about the sub`s cargo. Still, the salvagers remainhopeful. "There could be more in goulash cans than goulash," saidWinnie Odder, a project member.
